Swanson was an internationally renowned western artist. To us, he was “Jack”, Carmel Valley’s own “treasure”. He and Sally lived on the ranch they built 44 years ago where they raised their children and still raise and train fine horses. His home studio is the only studio known with an indoor stall so he could paint horses from life. Jack painted from what he had experienced firsthand in his cow punchin’ days, from memory and observation, not from photographs. Jack’s book, “The Life & Times of a Western Artist” (published in 2011), has been described as a defining book on Vaquero life. He closes with these words: “Adios Vaqueros, Adios Buckaroos – You truly did give us our finest hour.”
